Academic Regulations and Requirements

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for admission to the programme shall normally be graduates of the University of Ibadan or of other approved Universities or holders of equivalent qualifications recognised by Senate. All candidates must satisfy university of Ibadan matriculation requirements of five credit passes including English and Mathematics at the ‘O’ Level, at one sitting or six credit passes including English and Mathematics at the ‘O’ Level, at two sittings. Candidates with a pass in Mathematics may be considered.

i Candidates with Bachelor degree from an approved university must obtain a minimum of second class lower division.

ii For candidate offering options in Credit and Financial Risk Management, Finance, Taxation, and Business Analytics, a Bachelor’s degree with at least 2nd Class Honours Upper Division from an approved University may be required. Also, a personal written statement may be required from candidates seeking admission in the new options.

iii Candidates might be required to take special university of Ibadan admission test and/or interview.

iv All candidates must have demonstrated adequate intellectual capacity, professionalism, maturity and effective decision – making and problem solving potentials during the university’s admission test and interview.

v Holders of HND at the minimum of Upper Credit level with professional qualification may be considered for admission into executive/part-time programme.

vi Holders of HND at the minimum of Lower Credit level must possess Postgraduate Diploma in Management or Administration from a recognised Institution.

vii Candidates who possess professional qualifications must possess Postgraduate Diploma in Management or Administration from a recognised institution.

viii Candidates with good quantitative background and some basic knowledge of Economics as well as those with professional qualifications will have added advantage.

ix Candidates with at least 2 years of relevant industrial experience in Oil & Gas, Agribusiness and Telecommunication shall have added advantage for these options.

General Programme Requirements

(i) The programme leading to the award of MBA Degree (Regular and Part-time/Executive) shall normally last for four semesters of full-time.

(ii) A student shall register for a minimum of 72 Units including all compulsory, required and elective courses.

(iii) A student who passes a minimum of 20 Units including all the compulsory courses of the first semester and wishes to have a break of study shall be awarded a Certificate in Business Administration.

(iv) A student who also passes a minimum of 40 Units including all the compulsory courses of the second semester and wishes to have a break of study shall be awarded a Diploma in Business Administration or Management. The period of break between each programme must not exceed five (5) years.

(v) A student who cannot fulfill the MBA minimum requirement within the period of study shall be given a Certificate of honour or attendance.

Duration of Programme

The Programme will be for a minimum of four semesters (for full time), which includes 12 weeks of supervised internship programme in a reputable business organisation within and/or outside the country. The maximum numbers of semesters that can be spent is eight semesters.

MBA programme in Credit and Financial Risk Management, Finance, Taxation, and Business Analytics may not be run on part-time basis.

Registration

All candidates shall complete their registration formalities at the beginning of the each academic session in line with the University regulations. Candidates shall be required to take an approved combination of 700 level courses as Senate, on the recommendation of the Board of Postgraduate School, may from time to time determine.

Candidates must register for all compulsory and required courses. Candidates shall be required to register for a minimum of 15 units in each semester and a maximum of 45 units per session and overall maximum of 90 units. Students shall normally complete registration for courses for the semester not later than two weeks after the start of the semester.

Graduation Requirement

A candidate must have fulfilled the following conditions to be awarded the MBA degree:

i Pass a minimum of 72 credit units, including all the core courses. The requirement is broken down as follows:

· 45 units of general core courses

· 18 units of elective courses

· 6 units of project/dissertation

· 3 units of seminar

ii Obtain a score of at least 50% in each of the courses

Academic standards

  1. Academic session

The academic session consists of two semesters. Each semester normally comprises of 15 weeks of teaching and two weeks for examination.

  1. Modular/Course unit system

The MBA Degree Programme shall run on a modularised system, commonly referred to as Course Unit System. All courses are therefore sub-divided into more or less self-sufficient and logically consistent packages that are taught within a semester and examined at the end of that particular semester. Credit units are attached to each course

  1. Definition of Credit Unit

Credits are units attached to a course. One credit unit is equivalent to one hour per week per semester comprising of 15 weeks of lectures and tutorials.

Procedure for Registration

Ø Registration Procedure

Students shall normally complete registration for courses for the semester not later than two weeks after the start of the semester. A student cannot withdraw from a course after five weeks of lectures in a given semester without permission from the Provost of the Postgraduate College. A student who withdraws or who fails to seek the permission of the Provost of the Postgraduate College shall be deemed to have failed the course.

A student who fails to sit for more than 2 courses at the end of a given semester shall be deemed to have withdrawn voluntarily from the Programme.

a) Good Standing

To be in good standing, a student must, in each session, have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 3.00.

b) Withdrawal

A student whose cumulative grade point average is below 3.00 at the end of two consecutive semesters shall be deemed to have withdrawn from the Programme.

Ø Attendance

In order to be eligible for examination in a particular course, a student shall have attended a minimum of 75% of the total period of formal instructions.

Ø Continuous Assessment

Continuous assessment shall be through essays, tests, term papers, tutorial exercises, quizzes and take- home assessment. Scores from continuous assessment shall not be more than 30% of the final marks for courses that are primarily theoretical. For courses that are partly term paper presentations and partly theoretical, scores from continuous assessment shall constitute 40% of the final marks. For courses that are entirely term paper presentations, continuous assessment shall be based on a student’s term papers for reports and shall constitute 100% of the final marks.

Examination, Grading Procedure and Results

Examinations

i. In addition to continuous assessment, a final examination shall be given for every course at the end of every semester.

ii. The total scores obtainable for every course shall vary from one course to another, depending on the score of the continuous assessment of a course as explained under Continuous Assessment above as follows:

· Continuous Assessment 30% 40% 100%

· Final Examination 70% 60% 0%

· Total 100% 100% 100%

Note: Each course shall normally be completed and examined at the end of the semester in which it is offered.

Pass Mark

The minimum pass mark in any course/thesis shall be 50%.

The average mark for the programme is based on the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of all courses taken whether passed or not. An examination grade for each course is recorded in percentage mark. The grading of courses and grading System shall be the as contained in regulations of the UI PG College.

(ii) Deadline for Registration

In the case of fresh students, all registration formalities shall be completed not later than one week before matriculation day. Date of matriculation is fixed every session. All other candidates shall normally complete their registration formalities within three weeks of the beginning of the first semester.

(iii) Renewal of Registration

Candidates shall renew their registration at the beginning of each session until the completion of their Diploma programme/higher degree. For M.Phil/Ph.D. Students, this shall involve submission to the Postgraduate School of a satisfactory Annual Progress Report duly signed by the supervisor, the Head of Department, the Dean or Sub-Dean (Postgraduate) of the Faculty and the Dean/Sub- Dean of the Postgraduate School.

(iv). Suspension of Registration

A candidate may be allowed, for good reasons, to suspend his/ her registration for a year, in the first instance, on the recommendation of his/her Faculty Postgraduate Committee, through his/her Head of Department. Candidates applying for such suspension of registration shall complete prescribed forms obtainable from the Postgraduate School and pay a suspension fee. Suspension for an additional year, if approved, shall attract another fee. The maximum period allowed for suspension of registration shall normally be two years. Suspension of registration cannot be made retrospective except in exceptional cases, and even then a suspension fee will be as specified by the Postgraduate School. Suspension of registration implies that candidates shall pay the tuition fee ONLY for the session being suspended in addition to the suspension fee.

(v.) Reactivation of Suspended Registration

Suspended registration can be reactivated on completion of prescribed forms obtainable from the Postgraduate School and payment of reactivation fees as prescribed by the Postgraduate School from time to time.

(vi) Lapsed Registration

A candidate’s registration shall be deemed to have lapsed on the following grounds:

a) Failure to renew registration in any one session.

b) Failure to present oneself for examination at the expiration of the approved maximum period.

c) Inability to complete the requirements for the degree within the approved maximum period.

vii). Reactivation of Lapsed Registration

Fees as prescribed from time to time by the postgraduate school shall be paid per session to reactivate a registration that has lapsed owing to failure to renew registration. A registration that has lapsed in this way for two sessions shall not be reactivated. The student concerned may seek readmission. The consequences of lapsed registration arising from failure to complete the programme within the approved maximum period are the same.

viii). Concurrent Registration for Two Degree

No student shall be allowed to register concurrently for two higher degrees of the University.

ix) Additional/ Deletion of Courses

An application for addition/deletion shall attract a fee as prescribed by the postgraduate school. Addition/ deletion of courses after five weeks of commencement of the semester in which the course(s) is (are) taught shall not be entertained.

3. Matriculation

All new postgraduate students who are not alumni of the University of Ibadan are formally admitted to the University at Matriculation. At this ceremony, new students must take the Matriculation Oath and sign the register of matriculated students of the University at the Postgraduate School. Nobody can claim to be a student of this University until he/she has duly completed all Matriculation formalities.

Other Requirements

Candidates may be required by their departments to take remedial or other relevant courses grade earned in such courses may not be used in computing a student’s final grades but will be recorded in the candidate’s transcript and permanent record.

Course Teachers

Lecturers registered for MBA, postgraduate certificate and diploma programme shall not be permitted to teach courses under the same programme.

Project Reports

a) Project Reports where they are required shall be the original work of candidates and shall not include unacknowledged material which has been submitted for a higher degree or diploma of any University.

b) The language of report shall be English, except that material in other languages may be incorporated, as the subject-matter of the work may dictate

c) Project report shall be prepared in accordance with the appropriate format and other particulars approved by the Postgraduate School.

d) Candidates shall submit five copies of their report suitably bound to the heads of their respective departments. One copy shall be returned to the candidate at the end of the extermination

e) The project should be typed with 1.5 line spacing using Time Romans with front size 12. Paper should be of good quality not less than 80g m2. Size of paper in typescript should be A4, approximately 21.0cm 29cm, except for drawings and maps, on which no restriction is placed. A margin of 3.7cm is to be left on the left hand side of other margins except the top of the first page of each new chapter, which should be 5.0cm above the headings. Only one side of the paper should be used.

Board of Examiners

Subject to General Regulations of the University for the Course of examinations, there shall be a Board of Examiners for Postgraduate certificate and Diploma Examinations comprising the Head of Department as the chairman, all the lecturer teaching postgraduate courses in the Department, and External Examiner.

Course Examination

a) Candidates shall be required to take examinations in all prescribed courses at the end of the semesters in which the courses units assigned to the courses, which they have passed.

b) Candidates shall be credited with the courses or the number of course units assigned to the courses, which they have passed.

c) There shall be no re-sit examinations in any postgraduate course. A student who fails in any compulsory course or fails to meet the specified acceptable level of performance in a required course shall be required to re-register for the course and re-examined at the appropriate time (see Regulation A.4).

Final Assessment

a) Final Assessment shall be undertaken only when all the course and project requirements for the Certificate/Diploma have been fulfilled.

b) In case of conflicts, the Board of the Postgraduate School shall have power to determine the result of all final assessment examinations, and shall, if it thinks it fit, seek Policies and Regulations Governing Higher Degrees in UI and the Board of the Postgraduate School.

Award of Certificates and Diplomas

The award of Certificates or Diplomas to candidates, who have satisfied all the requirements, including the prescribed period of study, shall be approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board of the Postgraduate School.

Approval of Departmental and Faculty Requirements

Specific Department and Faculty Requirements, additional to or consequent on these General Regulations shall not be binding unless approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board of the Postgraduate School.

General Regulations Governing the Professional Master Degree Programmes

Designation and Duration

a) A higher degree programme designed to enable candidates attain a high level of competence in appropriate and specific professional disciplines shall be provided. It shall consist course work and a project, and shall be designated by appropriate letters approved by Senate for each programme.

b) The degree programme shall normally last less than three semesters from the date of first registration. The actual minimum duration for each particular degree programme shall be determined by the Postgraduate School Committee. For the Distance learning mode, the minimum duration shall not be less than five semesters and more than ten semesters.

c) Each student shall renew his/her registration at the beginning of each new session.

d) A candidate’s registration shall normally lapse if being a full-time student, he/she has not fulfilled the requirements for the award of degree after he has completed twice the minimum number of semesters prescribed for his/her particular degree programme. A part time student’s registration shall normally lapse if he/she does not fulfill the requirements after completing three times the minimum number of semesters prescribed for his/her particular degree programme for full-time study. This regulation also applies to the Distance Learning mode.

General Requirements

The General Regulations governing Higher Degree Programmes shall apply except as follows:

a) General Regulation

A candidate who does not have a first degree may be admitted to the Professional Degree of Master if he/she has a professional qualification approved by the Postgraduate School on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee. A list of approved professional qualifications shall formed part of approved Faculty /Departmental regulations for the professional Degree of Master.

b) Final Assessment

i. For professional Master degree programme in which candidate are required to prepare and submit Research Project Report, A departmental panel consisting of the internal examiners, with the Head of the Department as Chairman shall constitute the Board of Examiners for Professional Degree of Master. An External Examiner appointed by the Postgraduate School on the recommendation of the Faculty committee shall also be a member of the Board of Examiner

ii. Where a dissertation (as distinct from a project) is prescribed for the professional degree of Master all the relevant part of the General Regulation for Higher Degrees shall apply.
